Kingdom Road Trip - Creation

Last week was wild and crazy, even by Bowers standards, as we returned from San Antonio on Saturday and Kingdom Road Trip (aka VBS) began Sunday evening. One of my awesome girlfriends from church and I teamed up to take on the third graders. Because both of us work full-time in the summer, we split the lessons and it worked out fabulously.

Each night we taught a lesson and then went on a field trip that reinforced said lesson. It was a great way for the kids to learn and, quite frankly, I had a blast myself. The first evening we started a bit early so everyone could get registered and have all of the necessary forms filled out for the week.

Then we lined up to take off for a farm in Valley Mills where the lesson on creation would be taught - and "in the field" experience, if you will - while we took in God's amazing creation.

At least that was the plan until the bus we were on (Kindergarten through third grade) began overheating on the way to the farm. We ended up having a bit of a layover at a Cefco station while the other bus dropped off its cargo before returning for us.

And, let me tell you, if you haven't spent some time on a bus with second and third graders (the younger ones were picked up since the other bus had some room) in the depths of summer in Central Texas, you have missed out on quite an experience.

Seriously, they were good but it was H-O-T, y'all, and we were sooooo excited to see the other bus pull up. Once we got to the farm, we got snacks and watched a horse show that was awesome. If horses in psychadelic leg warmers don't make you smile, my friends, you just may want to check your pulse.
After getting up close and personal with the groovy performers, we headed on to the next stop...
Now who doesn't love a camel?
Repeat after me - EVERYONE LOVES A CAMEL!!!
My girl and her class were making their flower pots out of newspaper when we got to this station. She wasn't thrilled about me taking her picture because, really, what 'tween wants her friends to know she actually has parents. Much less that she actually LIKES her parents and may or may not request snuggle and/or game time each night. Certainly not my girl! :-)
While we weren't able to visit all of the amazing stations that were set up, I just had to take a picture of this little guy. You see, I have a weakness for donkeys. So does my man. In fact, once when we were building a house on in the country on a bunch of land (with a builder who I would not recommend as it fell apart before we ever moved in), my husband informed that he'd always wanted a miniature donkey.

Why? Because he - wait for it - wanted to make "bonnets for every holiday" and dress the donkey up to "give people who drive by something to smile about."

I couldn't make that up if I wanted to, friends.
Anyway, it was a great evening and I'm happy to tell you we had no more bus issues for the rest of the week. I'm also happy to tell you we have some VERY mechanically minded men in our church. As one who only puts gas in the car, I was very impressed with their prowess. And was also very grateful for it as well :-)
